EDUCATION ROOTED IN REMEMBRANCE, COMPASSION, AND UNITY: INSPIRED BY THE LEGACY OF NYANGE
On 10 May 2025, students and staff from the Catholic University of Rwanda (CUR) conducted a meaningful visit to the genocide memorial in Nyange: Nyange Genocide Memorial, which commemorates the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, and Igicumbi cy'Ubunyarwanda, the memorial for the Nyange students tragically killed on 18 March 1997 for refusing to divide along ethnic lines. This profound experience reaffirmed our deep commitment to the values of remembrance, compassion, and unity pillars upon which our mission as an institution firmly stands.
At CUR, remembrance and compassion go hand in hand in shaping our academic journey. Remembrance connects us to our history, reminding us of the cost of division and the value of peace. Compassion fosters a spirit of empathy and responsibility, guiding how we learn, teach, and live together. Together, these values help us educate students who are not only intellectually prepared but also morally grounded to contribute to a peaceful and united Rwanda.
During the visit, our university community listened to the powerful testimony of the heroic Nyange students, young Rwandans who, even in the face of death, refused to be divided. Their unwavering courage continues to echo across generations, reminding us that true education must shape both the intellect and the conscience.
At CUR, education transcends textbooks and lectures. It is a transformative journey that nurtures empathy, responsibility, and active citizenship. Inspired by the legacy of Nyange, we are committed to forming graduates who are not only knowledgeable but also deeply human ready to lead with integrity, serve with compassion, and uphold the values that unite us as one people.
Unity is our strength. Through education rooted in remembrance, compassion, and unity, we are preparing a generation of leaders equipped to shape a just, peaceful, and harmonious Rwanda.
