Project Overview
Project Description
An innovative initiative leveraging photovoltaic technology to provide efficient irrigation systems for modern agricultural production in greenhouses at CUR.
This innovative project demonstrates the practical application of renewable energy in sustainable farming practices through the implementation of solar-powered water pumping systems for greenhouse agriculture at the Catholic University of Rwanda.
The initiative combines cutting-edge photovoltaic technology with modern agricultural techniques to create an efficient, sustainable irrigation system. The project serves as both a practical solution for campus food production and a research platform for studying the integration of renewable energy in agricultural applications.
The system includes advanced monitoring capabilities, automated irrigation controls, and data collection systems that provide valuable insights into the optimization of solar-powered agricultural systems in tropical climates.
Project Objectives
- Demonstrate efficient solar-powered irrigation systems
- Provide practical training in renewable energy applications
- Generate research data on solar agriculture optimization

Project Activities
CUR – A HUB FOR INNOVATION AND GLOBAL COLLABORATION
The Catholic University of Rwanda (CUR) proudly positions itself as a center of academic excellence and international cooperation. From 23 to 25 September 2025, CUR hosted a high-level seminar in partnership with the University of Cádiz (Spain). The sessions focused on renewable energy, photovoltaic technologies, irrigation systems, and the circular economy, fields that are crucial for sustainable development in Rwanda and across Africa.
Bringing together professors, researchers, and industry professionals, the seminar underscored CUR’s commitment to integrating academic knowledge with real-world applications. From solar-powered water pumping to modern irrigation techniques and the use of artificial intelligence in agriculture, CUR is at the forefront of providing practical solutions to today’s pressing challenges.
As a dynamic and forward-looking institution, CUR continues to strengthen its role as a bridge between education, innovation, and community development. With expanding partnerships across Europe, America, Africa, and Asia, CUR offers students and partners opportunities for impactful research, technology transfer, and global dialogue.
At CUR, we believe in empowering the next generation of leaders to transform society through knowledge, innovation, and values-driven education.
